Reusable Bags for Grocery and Shopping.
Unfortunately, solutions to problems often do not happen because of government action or major money nor do they usually
happen overnight. Sometimes they happen one step at a time. The good news is that using reusable bags instead of plastic
is becoming the "standard" in many communities instead of plastic bags. Many communities have prohibited the use
of plastic bags. View the video on the right to see "The Solution" to our plastic bag dilema. The solution is easy
and will be more convinent to you than the plastic bags have ever been. The bag in the video has been used on every
trip to the grocery store for six months. They are strong and are durable. We feel it is not important where you get reusable bags. But it is important that we all begin changing to reusable. However, we do feel our reusable bags are excellent and are unmatched in quality and price. It is time. There are many other places as well as Jo's Bags which carry reusable bags.
Be sure to read some of the many reasons for using reusable bags below.

All seams are first serged, then double folded and resewn. The handle straps extend approximately 8" high when carried. This gives enough room to carry over shoulder if you choose to do so. The small pouch that holds the bag is approximately 3" wide by 5" tall and is sewn into the inside of the bag as shown above. The small pouch is usually a contrasting color, however, you can choose any of the colors you wish. I use only Guterman thread. It is very expensive, but is worth it. There is big difference in threads on the market. For example, never buy black thread. Why not?? Because black thread is made of the ends of all the other thread colors and is redyed black. It is not nearly as strong as first run colors. Buy a very dark navy blue and use it instead.
Below is a decorative thread pattern around the edge of the bag and on the handle (it is varigated thread - decorative stitching is not on all bags but may be requested as a "Special Request.").
These bags are very strong (will carry about 25 pounds), easy to carry, and are reusable.

1. PLASTIC BAGS may take up to 1000 years to decompose in the landfill.
2.
Worldwide, over one trillion plastics bags are used annually. That would circle the Earth 63 times each year.
3.
According to the EPA, more than 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. Of those, approximately
100 billion are plastic shopping bags, which cost retailers about $4 billion annually.
4.
Plastic bags aren’t biodegradable. They actually go through a process called photodegradation-breaking
down into smaller and smaller toxic particles that contaminate both soil and water, and end up entering
the food chain when animals accidentally ingest them.
5. Plastic bags, like all plastic products, are
made from petroleum. Americans use over 380 billion bags every year, throwing away millions of barrels of oil. It takes .48
megajoule to produce one bag. That .48 megajoule includes the petroleum that the plastic is made from, as well as the petroleum
used as energy in the manufacturing process to make the bag. An average car consumes 4.18 megajoule in driving 1 kilometer, or
the equivalent of 7 plastic bags. Convert this to miles and you get the equivalent of 14 bags per mile driven. That's right, the
petroleum to make 14 bags could move a car one mile.
6. According to the Wall Street
Journal, only 1% of plastic bags are recycled world-wide; the rest are left to live on indefinitely
in landfills.
Why Recycle
7. Because of their light weight, plastic
bags are most likely to fly away from landfills, settling instead in trees, storm drains, beaches, and
the ocean.
8. Plastic bags make up over 10% of washed-up
debris polluting the US coastline.e.
9. An estimated one million birds and 100,000
turtles and other sea animals die of starvation each year after ingesting discarded plastic bags which block their digestive
tracks.
10. Paper bags are not much better! The United States
cuts down 14 million trees per year simply to supply the demand for paper shopping bags.
11. One paper bag requires 13% more
energy to produce than to produce two plastic bags.
12. Even though paper
bags CAN be recycled, research shows that only 20% of paper bags end up recycled while the rest share a
fate with their plastic coubnterparts.
13. In the past five years, over a dozen
countries have banned or put a tax on disposable bags.
14. The average reusable bag has the lifespan
of over seven hundred disposable plastic bags.
15. Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by
just one person would save over 22,000 plastic bags.
